The Independence Day box-office clash between Emraan Hashmi’s Awarapan 2 and Sunny Deol’s Batwara 1947 has turned into a surprisingly one-sided affair. Both films arrived on August 14 with nostalgia, established stars and strong expectations around them, but six days into their theatrical run, the gap between the two has become enormous.
While Awarapan 2 has transformed its nostalgia factor into a genuine box-office storm, Batwara 1947 has struggled to maintain the momentum it generated during the Independence Day weekend.
According to KBP REVIEW latest trade estimates, Awarapan 2 has already crossed the ₹100 crore India net mark, whereas Batwara 1947 is still around the ₹31 crore mark.
Awarapan 2 has delivered the kind of comeback that even its makers may not have expected. The Emraan Hashmi led sequel opened on Friday, August 14, and immediately established itself as the stronger film of the two major Hindi releases.
The film collected approximately ₹22 crore on Day 1, giving Emraan the biggest opening of his career as a solo lead. The Independence Day holiday then provided another major boost, with the film jumping strongly on Saturday.
Its opening weekend eventually reached around ₹81.75 crore India net, according to trade estimates.

The film crossed ₹100 crore in its first week itself. The latest reports put its Day 6 India net at approximately ₹103.05 crore, while its worldwide gross is approaching the ₹150 crore mark.
However, the film continued to bring in substantial numbers instead of collapsing after the Independence Day boost. By Tuesday, it even recorded a slight increase over Monday, collecting around ₹9.75 crore. That kind of weekday stability is precisely what separates a strong opening from a genuine theatrical success.
The film has now emerged as Emraan Hashmi’s first ₹100 crore solo grosser, marking the biggest commercial milestone of his career.
There is also an interesting story behind the sequel. Producer Vishesh Bhatt has insisted that Awarapan 2 was not conceived simply as a cash grab or nostalgia exercise. The sequel was reportedly developed with the intention of giving the original story and its characters another chance to connect with audiences.
Batwara 1947: Strong Independence Day Boost, But Weekdays Expose The Problem
On the other side, Batwara 1947 has followed a completely different trajectory. The Rajkumar Santoshi-directed Partition drama opened to approximately ₹5.75 crore on Friday. The film then benefited enormously from the Independence Day holiday, jumping to around ₹13.50 crore on Saturday.
However, Sunday brought the first warning sign. The film dropped to around ₹7.25 crore before Monday delivered a much sharper fall. The fourth day saw a decline of around 72%, pushing the film into much weaker weekday territory.

The film has collected ₹31.26 crore India net after six days and now aims to cross the ₹32 crore mark.
Tuesday did bring a small recovery, but it was nowhere near enough to change the overall picture. Batwara 1947 is now fighting to maintain its shows while Awarapan 2 continues to dominate the box-office conversation.
Awarapan 2 reportedly generated around ₹81.75 crore during its opening weekend, while Batwara 1947 managed approximately ₹26.50 crore.
Why Is Batwara 1947 Struggling?
Batwara 1947 had several factors working in its favour: Sunny Deol, Rajkumar Santoshi, Preity Zinta, Aamir Khan’s backing and a subject connected to one of the most important chapters of Indian history.
The Independence Day spike was encouraging, but the sharp Monday fall suggests that the film did not generate sufficiently strong repeat demand. Rajkumar Santoshi has also revealed that investors initially hesitated over the project because of its subject and Sunny Deol’s portrayal of an Indian Muslim during Partition. He clarified that Deol’s character is an Indian Muslim and not Pakistani.
The film’s A-rating and serious historical subject may have further limited its broad family audience appeal.
