The Independence Day clash is heating up: Awarapan 2 is currently ahead by a huge margin, but Batwara 1947 still has two crucial days to change the game.

Emraan Hashmi’s much awaited sequel is currently enjoying a sizeable lead over Sunny Deol’s historical drama, setting up an intriguing battle when both films finally arrive in cinemas.

The two releases could hardly be more different. Awarapan 2 is carrying the nostalgia of the 2007 cult favourite and brings Emraan Hashmi back to an emotional action space that has a dedicated following. Batwara 1947, meanwhile, is a period drama set against the backdrop of Partition, led by Sunny Deol and backed by Aamir Khan Productions.

The Independence Day holiday gives both films an opportunity, but their pre-release momentum is currently moving in very different directions.

Awarapan 2 Opens A Big Lead – The latest advance booking figures strongly favour Awarapan 2. According to KBP TRADE REPORTS, numbers currently being tracked, the film has sold approximately 37,583 tickets across 3,181 shows, generating around ₹1.31 crore gross from the reported advance bookings.

When blocked seats are included, its potential gross rises to approximately ₹2.69 crore.

The most encouraging part for the makers is the ticket volume. With more than 37,000 tickets already sold before release, the film has managed to create a sizeable base of advance interest.

The original Awarapan may not have been a massive theatrical blockbuster when it released in 2007, but over the years it developed a strong cult following. Its songs, emotional story and Emraan Hashmi’s performance gave the film a second life through television, digital platforms and social media.

That fan base is now translating into curiosity for the sequel. Directed by Nitin Kakkar, Awarapan 2 brings Emraan back into a similar emotional-action zone while expanding the cast with Disha Patani and Shabana Azmi. The film is scheduled to release worldwide on August 14, making the Independence Day holiday an important opportunity for the sequel.

Batwara 1947 Trails, But The Fight Is Not Over – The Sunny Deol starrer has currently recorded around ₹40.08 lakh gross in Day 1 advance bookings, with approximately 11,598 tickets sold across 3,040 shows. Including blocked seats, the potential gross stands at around ₹1.40 crore.

The difference is immediately visible. Awarapan 2 has sold more than three times the number of tickets currently reported for Batwara 1947.

However, advance booking does not always tell the complete box office story. Batwara 1947 has a completely different selling point.

The film features a strong ensemble including Preity Zinta, Shabana Azmi, Ali Fazal and Karan Deol, with Rajkumar Santoshi directing. Aamir Khan’s association with the project also gives it additional visibility among audiences and trade circles.

Why Awarapan 2 Is Winning The Pre-Release Battle – At this stage, Awarapan 2 has several advantages.

First comes the familiarity factor. Audiences already know the world and emotional identity of the original film. Secondly, Emraan Hashmi’s music driven fan following remains particularly strong among viewers who grew up with his 2000s films.

The sequel is also benefiting from a strong social media nostalgia wave. The original Awarapan has repeatedly been rediscovered by younger audiences over the years, making the sequel feel less like a completely new property and more like the return of a beloved character and musical era

Bollywood Hungama recently spoke to trade experts who projected an opening of around ₹12 crore for Awarapan 2, compared with around ₹8 crore for Batwara 1947. The publication also reported that Awarapan 2 could comfortably surpass the original film’s lifetime collection on Day 1 itself.

The PVR INOX Cinepolis Factor – Earlier booking trends from the national multiplex chains had already indicated that Awarapan 2 was establishing a comfortable lead.

The film had crossed the 20,000-ticket mark across PVR INOX and Cinepolis combined in earlier tracking, while Batwara 1947 remained considerably behind.

This is important because multiplex advance bookings can provide an early indication of urban audience interest. At the same time, Batwara 1947 could benefit from audiences making last-minute decisions, particularly on the holiday itself.

Both films release on Friday, August 14, meaning they have a major Independence Day holiday on August 15 working in their favour.

Batwara 1947 is a historical film centred around Partition arriving during Independence Day weekend has an obvious emotional connection with the calendar. If the content clicks and taken strong reviews and positive word of mouth, audiences could turn up in large numbers even without an extraordinary advance booking lead.

So the first-day numbers could tell one story, while the Saturday and Sunday collections could tell another.

Can Batwara 1947 Pull Off A Surprise? The current advance booking gap is significant, and it cannot simply be ignored. However, historical dramas are often more dependent on reviews, word of mouth and family audiences than on pre-release fan driven bookings.

If Batwara 1947 delivers emotionally and Sunny Deol’s performance connects strongly, the film can potentially see a substantial jump after release.

The presence of Preity Zinta and Sunny Deol together also carries nostalgia of its own, while Rajkumar Santoshi’s association with patriotic and historical storytelling adds credibility to the project.

The teaser of Haiwaan has arrived, and Priyadarshan’s upcoming thriller immediately creates intrigue by revealing very little while establishing a dark and unsettling world.

The film brings Akshay Kumar and Saif Ali Khan back together after 18 years, but this time their equation is far removed from the lighter spaces audiences associate with their earlier collaborations.

The short teaser deliberately keeps the faces and identities of the two characters largely hidden. Saif Ali Khan appears to be playing a blind martial artist, relying on his heightened senses to navigate danger, while Akshay Kumar is presented as an intensely menacing figure.

Akshay’s character appears to be genuinely dark. The teaser focuses on atmosphere, shadows and suspense instead of giving away major plot points, making the confrontation between the two actors the biggest hook.

The film is directed by Priyadarshan and is an official Hindi adaptation of his 2016 Malayalam thriller Oppam. The cast also includes Shriya Pilgaonkar, Saiyami Kher, Boman Irani and Jisshu Sengupta, while Malayalam superstar Mohanlal is attached to the film in a special appearance.

Interestingly, the teaser comes at a significant point in Akshay Kumar’s career as the actor explores a completely dark character. He has previously described the role as an opportunity to play an outright evil character, making Haiwaan a noticeable departure from his recent comedy and mainstream commercial outings.

The film is scheduled to arrive in cinemas worldwide on September 11, 2026. With Priyadarshan returning to a tense thriller space and Akshay and Saif sharing the screen after nearly two decades, Haiwaan has now given audiences a very different reason to look forward to their reunion.

The teaser may not reveal much, but that is precisely what makes the mystery around Haiwaan work.
