Dharma Productions and Sikhya Entertainment reunite for their fourth collaboration, with Akash A Kaushik making his directorial debut

Ayushmann Khurrana and Sara Ali Khan are ready to take their on screen pairing into an entirely new world with Udta Teer, an upcoming high energy spy comedy backed by Dharma Productions and Sikhya Entertainment. The makers have locked October 9 2026 as the theatrical release date, setting the stage for a fresh combination of comedy, action and espionage on the big screen.

The makers describe it as a humour filled family entertainer that turns the spy world on its head, promising a caper built around comedy, action and chaotic situations. That genre combination could give the film a different flavour from the serious, action heavy spy films that have dominated Hindi cinema in recent years.

For Ayushmann, the film also marks another attempt to return to the humour driven space that became one of the strongest parts of his career. The actor has built a reputation around finding unusual concepts within mainstream entertainment, and Udta Teer appears to take that approach into the spy genre rather than playing it completely straight.

Sara Ali Khan, meanwhile, gets another opportunity to explore comedy and commercial entertainment alongside Ayushmann. Interestingly, the two actors are also appearing together in Pati Patni Aur Woh Do, making Udta Teer their second announced collaboration. The difference this time is that their new film moves away from relationship comedy and into the world of espionage.

The project is particularly interesting behind the camera as well. Akash A Kaushik is making his directorial debut with Udta Teer. A writer by profession, Kaushik has previously been associated with several mainstream Hindi projects, and he now gets the opportunity to make his first feature as a director with a relatively large commercial setup.

The film brings together two production houses with an increasingly interesting collaboration history. Udta Teer marks the fourth collaboration between Dharma Productions and Sikhya Entertainment, following The Lunchbox, Kill and Gyaarah Gyaarah. Their partnership has already covered very different genres, from an internationally acclaimed drama to action and crime storytelling, and the new project takes them into commercial spy comedy.

The production team is equally notable. Udta Teer is produced by Karan Johar, Adar Poonawalla, Apoorva Mehta, Guneet Monga Kapoor and Achin Jain. With Dharma bringing its mainstream entertainment experience and Sikhya coming from a strong content-driven background, the combination gives the project an interesting balance between commercial appeal and unconventional storytelling.

The supporting cast also includes several familiar names, with reports listing Rahul Bose, Ram Kapoor, Supriya Pilgaonkar, Brijendra Kala, Mukul Dev, Suhail Nayyar, Sandeep Anand, Gulshan Grover and Parul Gulati among the actors associated with the film. However, the makers have deliberately kept the detailed character information and storyline under wraps for now.

The makers have so far kept the core story under wraps while establishing the genre, lead pairing and release date. This leaves considerable room for the trailer and promotional campaign to introduce the world of Udta Teer.

That makes the film particularly dependent on chemistry between its leads. Ayushmann’s comic timing and Sara’s ability to play energetic commercial characters could become important assets if the writing gives them enough material.

For Ayushmann, Udta Teer comes at an important stage of his career. The actor has experimented extensively with different genres, but his strongest audience connection has traditionally come from films that combine entertainment with an unusual central idea.

The spy comedy format could therefore be a smart choice. It gives him an opportunity to retain his comic identity while placing him inside a more commercial and action oriented world.

Sara, too has been increasingly moving towards mainstream projects. The actress has multiple films lined up across genres, and sharing screen space with Ayushmann in two projects gives the pair an opportunity to establish a new commercial pairing.

The first challenge, however, will be making Udta Teer look distinct. The spy genre is already crowded, and audiences have become accustomed to large scale action, glamorous locations and high concept missions. The film’s USP will have to come from its comedy, characters and writing, rather than simply the spy backdrop.

Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah followed at No. 2 with 4.4 million viewers, while Musafir Cafe secured the third position with approximately 4.3 million.

Lock Upp: Sach Ya Sazaa was next with 4.2 million viewers, while India’s Got Latent Season 2 slipped to the fifth position with 3.7 million, after occupying the top spot in the previous week’s ranking. The remaining positions were occupied by Thukra Ke Mera Pyaar with 3.5 million, Operation Safed Sagar with 3.4 million, Anupamaa with 3.3 million, The Taj Story with 3.2 million, and Uyir, which completed the Top 10.

Khatron Ke Khiladi 15, the early lead is particularly significant because the season has only just begun. If the show maintains its momentum through the coming weeks, it could establish itself as the strongest performing unscripted properties of the current OTT cycle.
