Aditya Sarpotdar about Why Maddock’s Horror Universe Isn’t Just About Crossovers; Says Every Film Must Stand On Its Own… Munjya director says the franchise is being built for the 90% audience that simply wants a good film, while still rewarding hardcore fans.
According to filmmaker Aditya Sarpotdar, that question sits at the heart of Maddock Films’ rapidly expanding Horror Comedy Universe.
Speaking in a recent interview with Variety India, the director behind Munjya and the upcoming Shakti Shalini shared his philosophy on building one of Indian cinema’s fastest-growing cinematic universes, Rather than creating films that rely heavily on references, hidden connections and complicated timelines, Sarpotdar believes every film should first succeed as an independent cinematic experience.
According to him, only a small percentage of viewers actively track every character connection and long-term storyline. The majority simply visit theatres to enjoy a good film.”The audience that follows every roadmap and theory is not even ten percent. The remaining ninety percent just wants an entertaining film. Our responsibility is to satisfy both audiences,” he explained.
While projects like Stree, Bhediya, Munjya, Thama and now Shakti Shalini exist inside one shared universe, each film has been designed to function independently instead of depending entirely on crossover moments.
He explained that a franchise survives only when each new chapter is memorable on its own.”The franchise is only as good as its last film,” he said, adding that every movie should contribute something fresh rather than merely extending an existing story.
The upcoming film stars Aneet Padda in a double role inspired by Bengali folklore. She plays Shakti, an ordinary woman who gradually transforms into a protector, while simultaneously portraying Shalini, a vengeful spirit seeking justice after a brutal betrayal.He admitted that feedback surrounding previous projects like Thama has already influenced decisions being made for upcoming films, Rather than treating criticism as negativity, the team considers it part of the creative learning process.
