Kalyani Priyadarshan Makes Bollywood Debut Jai Mehta’s post-apocalyptic survival thriller brings together Ranveer Singh, Kalyani Priyadarshan and an international technical team for a genre-defining spectacle.
His much-awaited zombie survival thriller Pralay has finally gone on floors in Mumbai. The film, directed by Jai Mehta, has spent several months in intensive pre-production, with the team working extensively on its world-building, action design, technical requirements and visual language before taking the cameras out.
For Ranveer, Pralay is also personally significant. The film marks his first production venture under Maa Kasam Films, making the actor-producer directly involved in the project beyond his acting responsibilities.
It also marks Jai Mehta’s feature-film directorial debut, while Malayalam star Kalyani Priyadarshan makes her Hindi film debut opposite Ranveer.
Birla Studios, Maa Kasam Films and True Story Films are backing the project, while an international technical crew is helping bring its post-apocalyptic world to life.
After the success of Dhurandhar, Ranveer could have easily chosen another conventional big-screen entertainer. Instead, he has opted for something considerably riskier.
Pralay is a post-apocalyptic zombie survival thriller set against a dystopian Mumbai devastated by a fictional outbreak. The story revolves around survival, human relationships and the instinct to protect the people who matter when society itself begins to collapse.
According to KBP REVIEW’s previously shared by the team, Jai Mehta and Vishal Kapoor have written the screenplay, and the story is completely original. Hansal Mehta has specifically clarified that Pralay is not an adaptation of José Saramago’s novel Blindness, despite earlier speculation online.
That clarification is important because the film’s premise had earlier led to comparisons with other dystopian stories. The makers, however, are building their own universe rather than adapting an existing international property.
Jai Mehta may be making his feature-film directorial debut, but he isn’t new to filmmaking. He previously worked as a co-director on Scam 1992: The Harshad Mehta Story and directed the series Lootere. His work in those projects reportedly caught Ranveer’s attention.
In fact, Hansal Mehta revealed that Ranveer himself approached Jai after watching his work. Jai then pitched the idea of Pralay to the actor, who became convinced about the project and eventually came on board.
Kalyani Priyadarshan gained significant attention with the Malayalam blockbuster Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra, and her performance and action presence in the film created a strong buzz beyond Kerala. Pralay now brings her into Hindi cinema opposite Ranveer Singh.
The scale of Pralay has also contributed significantly to the hype. The project carries a budget of around ₹300 crore. The money is going into more than just star fees. The film requires extensive production design, action choreography, visual effects, creature work and technical infrastructure to create a convincing post-apocalyptic environment.
The production is highly technical and intensive, with the team developing its visual world well before the shoot. The goal is to make Mumbai itself feel transformed.
The makers are embracing live locations, allowing the city’s streets, buildings and real-world textures to become part of the post-apocalyptic setting.
The latest production development also comes after the makers reconsidered their overseas shooting plans. The film was initially expected to have a major Australia schedule, but the production has now shifted the immediate shoot to Mumbai.
For the film itself, however, the Mumbai schedule could turn out to be an advantage, especially if the makers successfully use real locations to build the atmosphere.
International Technical Crew For An Indian Zombie World – The biggest challenges for Pralay will be convincing audiences that its world is genuinely falling apart.
Zombie cinema depends heavily on atmosphere. The creatures need to look believable, the destruction needs to feel physical, and the action cannot look artificial.
The team includes specialists working across cinematography, action, motion capture and other technical departments. Public production listings also credit cinematographer Juan Carlos Gil, while stunt and motion-capture talent have been associated with the project.
