Mirzapur The Movie is heading to cinemas with an ‘A’ certificate after the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) asked the makers to make a series of changes to the film’s language and intimate content.
However, in a development that is likely to interest fans of the franchise, the censor board has reportedly not removed any violent or gory sequence from the theatrical cut.
The film has been certified with a final runtime of 197 minutes and 19 seconds 3 hours, 17 minutes and 19 seconds. The certification was completed on August 29, just days before the film’s scheduled theatrical release on September 4, 2026.
The CBFC changes have primarily focused on abusive language, a caste reference and two intimate sequences.
According to the certification details reported by KBP REVIEW and subsequently reported by several publications, the makers were asked to reduce the intimate portions by 50 percent, resulting in approximately 35 seconds of footage being removed.
For a franchise known for its raw language, graphic violence and unapologetic depiction of the criminal underworld, the fact that the violent portions have remained intact is arguably the biggest takeaway from the certification process.

The CBFC reportedly ordered modifications at multiple points in the film. Cuss words were muted at four places, while abusive expressions were replaced with alternative words at six locations.
A dialogue beginning with the phrase “Galey se lag kar…” was also modified. The certification details further mention specific word-level changes in different portions of the film.
In the first half, one word was replaced with “kamar”, while in the post-interval section, the word “lanth”, identified as meaning “idiot”, was modified.
A caste-related reference was also changed following the Board’s directions.
The visual modifications were limited to intimate material. Two sequences, one appearing before the interval and another after it, were reduced by 50 percent through changes to visuals and sound. The cumulative deletion came to 35 seconds.
Interestingly, the CBFC did not ask the makers to remove any violent or gory scene.
That distinction is important for Mirzapur because violence has always been the defining elements of the franchise.
The theatrical film has been granted an ‘A’ certificate, allowing it to retain its adult-oriented tone while making specific alterations required by the certification process.
The film is over three hours long – The other major talking point from the censor certificate is the runtime.

The length places Mirzapur The Movie among the increasingly prominent long-format Indian theatrical releases of the post-pandemic era.
However, the runtime also indicates that the makers appear to have retained a substantial amount of material while transitioning a popular streaming universe to the big screen.
For viewers who have followed the series over three seasons, the extended runtime could allow the theatrical story to accommodate its large ensemble and multiple character arcs without compressing the narrative too aggressively.
Violence stays intact despite the A certificate Perhaps the most interesting aspect of the certification is what the CBFC didn’t cut.
The Board reportedly left the violent and gory sequences untouched. That means the film’s adult certification is not being used as a reason to substantially soften its action or crime-world imagery.
This could prove important because Mirzapur has always been built around power struggles, revenge, guns, bloodshed and the ruthless politics of its fictional underworld.
The film’s theatrical adaptation therefore appears to retain the visual identity that audiences associate with the franchise, even though certain words and intimate moments have been modified.
Another detail emerging from the certification document is that the film was reviewed by the CBFC Revising Committee.
Typically, a film first goes before the Examining Committee. If the makers seek a review following modifications or certification-related decisions, the Revising Committee can subsequently examine the material and make the final call.
In this case, the certification documents dated August 29 record the Revising Committee’s involvement before the film received its ‘A’ certificate.
Mirzapur The Movie brings the cult franchise to cinemas
The film represents a significant experiment for Indian entertainment: taking a hugely successful streaming crime saga and turning it into a theatrical feature.
The Mirzapur series has built a strong following through its three-season run, with characters such as Kaleen Bhaiya, Guddu Pandit, Munna Tripathi and Golu Gupta becoming closely identified with the franchise.
The movie brings several of the principal performers back to the big screen. Pankaj Tripathi returns as Kaleen Bhaiya, Ali Fazal as Guddu Pandit and Divyenndu as Munna Tripathi.
Shweta Tripathi Sharma, Rasika Dugal, Shriya Pilgaonkar, Abhishek Banerjee, Harshita Gaur, Ravi Kishan, Jitendra Kumar, Mohit Malik, Sheeba Chadha, Rajesh Tailang and Sonal Chauhan are also part of the ensemble.
The film is directed by Gurmmeet Singh, who has also directed episodes of the original series, while Puneet Krishna, the creator and writer of Mirzapur, is credited as the writer.
The project is produced by Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar under Excel Entertainment, with Kassim Jagmagia and Vishal Ramchandani serving as co-producers. Amazon MGM Studios is also associated with the theatrical project.
