SS Rajamouli and Mahesh Babu’s Varanasi is already entering record territory months before its theatrical release.
According to the KBP REVIEW industry reports, the film is reportedly targeting a staggering ₹325 crore deal for its theatrical distribution rights across Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.
If the makers and distributors finalise a deal at that level, Varanasi will enter an unprecedented business zone in the Telugu states and face enormous expectations at the box office.
However, the number has already triggered considerable discussion because it would require Varanasi to perform at a level that very few Telugu films have ever reached.
With a reported theatrical valuation of ₹325 crore, the film could need approximately ₹650–700 crore gross in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana to reach a comfortable break even zone.
The exact requirement will depend on the final distribution agreement, distributor share, ticket pricing and other commercial factors. That immediately puts Varanasi in a fascinating position.
At the same time, the business expectations surrounding the project remain equally enormous. Varanasi’s Reported ₹325 Crore AP – Telangana Valuation
The figure has circulated widely across social media and regional trade discussions, with multiple reports pointing towards an exceptionally aggressive valuation for the Mahesh Babu & S.S. Rajamouli combination.
If the makers finalise the deal, it would represent much more than another big-ticket Telugu distribution agreement. It would establish a new benchmark for the pre-release valuation of a Telugu film in its home market.
For comparison, RRR, Pushpa 2: The Rule and Baahubali 2 occupy the top positions among the biggest theatrical grossers in the Telugu states. Recent box-office lists put RRR at around ₹415 crore, Pushpa 2 at approximately ₹346 crore and Baahubali 2 at roughly ₹327 crore in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.

That comparison explains why the reported ₹325 crore figure has generated such a huge conversation. The reported rights value itself approaches the entire gross business achieved by some of the biggest Telugu blockbusters ever released.
Why ₹650–700 Crore Becomes the Talking Point
A theatrical distribution deal does not send the film’s entire gross collection directly to the distributor. Exhibitors and distributors divide theatrical revenue according to the prevailing business structure. Therefore, a ₹325 crore rights valuation would create a substantially higher gross-revenue requirement for the distributor to recover the investment.
Based on commonly discussed trade calculations, Varanasi could need somewhere around ₹650–700 crore gross in the Telugu states to reach or move beyond the break even zone if the reported ₹325 crore deal becomes final.
That target would represent an extraordinary challenge.
For context, RRR remains around the ₹415 crore mark in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana in several widely circulated box-office compilations, while Pushpa 2 stands around ₹346 crore and Baahubali 2 around ₹327 crore.
In other words, Varanasi would need to move dramatically beyond the existing Telugu-state benchmarks to reach a ₹650–700 crore target.
However, audiences should not treat ₹650–700 crore as an officially declared break even figure. The final economics will depend on the actual rights price, distributor terms, ticket rates, revenue-sharing arrangements and the film’s eventual theatrical performance.
Mahesh Babu and Rajamouli Give Varanasi an Unusual Advantage
The reason the industry is even discussing such a massive valuation comes down to the combination at the centre of the film. Mahesh Babu and S.S. Rajamouli have never worked together before, making their first collaboration a major event for Telugu cinema.
Rajamouli, meanwhile, comes off the worldwide success and international recognition of RRR. His next project therefore automatically carries the expectations of an event film rather than a conventional star vehicle.
The project also stars Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Prithviraj Sukumaran, giving Varanasi a broader national and international profile. The makers have officially scheduled the film for April 7, 2027.
The team is also positioning Varanasi as a large scale action adventure spectacle with a global canvas. The film is expected to combine history, fantasy, action and time-travel elements, although the makers continue to guard several narrative details closely.
The Film Is Still Under Production
Despite the enormous business discussions taking place well ahead of release, Varanasi remains in production.
Rajamouli revealed in July that the team still had approximately 80 days of shooting left, while the major action portions had already been completed. The filmmaker indicated that the remaining portions were smaller and maintained that the April 2027 release schedule remained unchanged.
That timeline becomes particularly important when we consider the film’s business expectations. Rajamouli has built a reputation for spending considerable time on production and post-production, particularly when a project demands extensive visual effects.
Varanasi will likely require substantial VFX work and technical finishing before the makers take the film to theatres.
The team has already announced April 7, 2027, as the release date, giving the production several months to complete post-production after filming wraps.
Varanasi Has Already Attracted Major Pre-Release Business Interest
The film’s theatrical value has attracted attention long before the latest ₹325 crore report emerged. The distributors had already started discussions around theatrical and non-theatrical rights, with buyers showing interest in territories such as Nizam and overseas markets.
That early interest comes as no surprise. Rajamouli’s previous films have demonstrated his ability to create enormous theatrical value, while Mahesh Babu commands a massive following in his home market.
Their combination gives distributors an opportunity to market Varanasi as a genuine theatrical event rather than simply another Telugu release. However, a higher valuation also creates greater financial risk.
A distributor who pays an exceptionally high price must depend on strong audience response, sustained theatrical occupancy and potentially higher ticket prices to recover the investment.
Can Varanasi Break the Telugu-State Record?
This remains perhaps the biggest question surrounding the reported deal. If Varanasi eventually targets ₹650–700 crore gross in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, the film would need to redefine the existing market ceiling almost completely.
RRR currently serves as the benchmark in several widely reported Telugu state box office lists at around ₹415 crore, followed by Pushpa 2 and Baahubali 2. That means Varanasi would need to add hundreds of crores to the current record.
Varanasi will arrive on April 7, 2027, placing it in the broader festive period around Ugadi and Ram Navami. A powerful opening combined with strong word of mouth could help the film sustain its theatrical run and push its collections towards unprecedented territory.
Still, predicting ₹650–700 crore at this stage would be premature. The makers have not yet launched the full promotional campaign, and they have not officially announced the final distribution agreement.
