According to History of Hinduism, Airavata was born during the legendary Samudra Manthan (Churning of the Ocean), making him one of the fourteen divine treasures that emerged from the cosmic event. Since then, he has occupied a unique position in Hindu tradition as the King of All Elephants and a symbol of strength, purity, prosperity, and divine authority.
Ancient texts describe Airavata as a majestic white elephant possessing immense supernatural powers. Airavata is believed to command the clouds and rainfall, playing an important role in maintaining cosmic balance. His association with rain also symbolizes fertility, abundance, and life itself.
Several ancient literary works also mention that Airavata originally possessed wings. According to one popular legend, Airavata and the other celestial elephants once flew across the Himalayas before resting on a giant tree. Their landing accidentally disturbed Sage Dirghatamas during his penance, prompting the enraged sage to curse them, causing them to lose their wings forever.
Another interesting story explains the elephant’s wrinkled skin. It is believed that Airavata and other divine elephants offended the wife of Agni, after which they were cursed with rough skin. Since then, elephants have been associated with cooling themselves through water and mud, a fascinating connection between History and nature.
References to Airavata appear in several ancient Hindu texts, including Matanga Lila, a Sanskrit treatise believed to date between 800 CE and 1000 CE, making it significantly older than many later literary adaptations, including the Ramcharitmanas. These texts describe Airavata not merely as an animal but as a divine guardian who protects cosmic order alongside the Diggajas, the celestial elephants believed to guard the eight directions of the universe.The renewed discussion surrounding Airavata reflects the level of attention being paid to every visual element of Ramayana.
